In wake of #RedForEd, first-time candidates flood races for Arizona Legislature
Kristina Kelly, a second-grade teacher, is running for the Republican nomination in a crowded race for Senate District 23 in Scottsdale and Fountain Hills. Rep. Michelle Ugenti-Rita, a longtime Republican member in the House, is also gunning for the seat.
Kelly isn't a member of the teacher's union and said she disagreed with the length of #RedForEd's six-day walkout given the pressure it put on families with children. But, she said, Republicans haven't solved the problem.
"I think the governor has done a great job starting us off," Kelly said. "But we need to do more. We need to find more permanent funding sources for education."
